Habrá alguna conexión con "The Woman in White"? Do you think there will be a connection with our 4th year novel?
Esperamos vuestros comentarios. Please feel free to post
Gracias

I strongly recommend this play. The performance is great, also the voices of Emilio Gutiérrez Caba (as Arthur Kipps) are exceptional.

And remember "Whistle, and I'll come to you again".

Susana this is the third time I try to post this comment so you might see it as many times. Thank you very much for your comment we are all excited about the whistling.... What can it mean?

Thanks to Susan and Paloma for your posts. I´ve seen the play twice, once in London and once in Madrid with the theatre group. The London one was frightening; we were in the Circle in the Matinee and there were three people only up there..... I felt, at times, that we were, in fact, four....

there will be any connection with the woman in white? Maybe she has been dropped in a puddle of mud and has starred in another story... Soon we´ll know it... ;)

We finally went to the play yesterday, it was not disappointing! We were frightened, scared, our hairs stood on end, and a lot of other sensations were felt by the mayority, I am sure, and all of them had to do with fright. The person who was sitting before me even screamed once and I was very fortunate to miss the sudden apparition of the woman in black in the threshold , thanks to her head! I preferred Mr. de Juan´s performance to Mr. Gutierrez-Caba´s, the sound and other special effects were good, the only thing is that I would have covered the woman´s face with a see-through veil that would have enabled us to see her pale and haggard features in a less obvious way. I think seeing her face completely made her less of a ghost and consequently not so frightening. In London they showed her in that fashion and it was much more spooky. The play is very good because it has all the ingredients of a ghost story and it is a good example of its genre. What do you think? Ana, Hermi did you prefer this version or the one we saw years ago? There was an Etonian amongst us I would like to hear his opinion about the play. Are you going to come again?

Carmen dijo...

Hello, It was quite unnerving all the first part expecting the woman in black to appear any moment!!!!In the end she did appear and, quite honestly, she was not adequately dressed, the English play shows her in a cloak with a big hood which suits her economical situation better. Her dress and hat too grand! The scenerario good the two actors tolarable, the one playing the actor better than the solicitor. the story is quite good, though depressing and negative in its perverse idea of vengence. A ghostly Madame Defarge seeking revenge for ever and ever. A little too noisy, with good use of light and darkness. the ghost elements of the story effective. Any connections with the Woman in White? Well ,yes. Mr. Hartright meets his strange woman in the middle of the heath, at night, quite unexpectedly, and the second time in the churchyard,"as a ghaist should be". differences, Anne is a human being.... as yet. Before I go, welcome, OE (old Etonian)!

maria dijo...

In December 1993, BBC Radio 5 broadcast an adaptation of the novel. This is the reason why the sound is the main character.
I liked the play, I was frightened and scared. I am always scary, but I like to see these plays... I don´t know why... Moreover, as we went to have a drink I forgot the terrible face of the woman in black!!!
The actors, I prefer Mr. Gutierrez-Caba´s performance to Mr. de Juan´s. The last one was drowning in the phrases and his role, I think, was "easier" than the first one. Of course, special effects, ilumination, were great.
When are we going to the next play?

Dakota dijo...

hahaha, are you always scary, María? ;) :P A very frightening person, I see! hahahahah ;P

maria dijo...

Yes, Dakota, I am scary. I had never gone to see a fear play. In addition, the theater was almost empty, and it was cold... the darkness, it has all the ingredients of a ghost story...
Now I need to see a funny play as Star Trip at the Teatro Bishop. I recommend you!!

theatre Bishop = Teatro Alfil, calle del Pez, 15 € ;)

Dakota dijo...

Ah, María, it's a language problem! I was not laughing at your fear!!!

It was scary! - Daba miedo
It was frightening - Daba miedo

I'm scary - Yo doy miedo!

I'm scared - Tengo miedo

That's why I was laughing so much!

Good idea, to compensate the fright! ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. The only thing I can do this month is go to see Camille Claudel's sculptures in Fundación Maphre. I always wanted to travel to Paris to see them, and now they're here! (much cheaper!)

See you!

maria dijo...

Now I see!! hahaha!! 'I´m scary' doesn´t mean that I wanted to say!! Sorry, so, I´m scared... ;) What a mess!!

LA MUJER DE NEGRO. Teatro Infanta Isabel 22-11-07

‘The woman in black’ is a simply entertaining traditional ghost story ( I will not reveal any detail in case anyone should go and watch it ).
The beginning is slightly poor: good idea to try to create a relaxed and funny atmosphere ( to enhance the contrast afterwards ) but it is a bit repetitive. The rest of the performance catches the attention gradually, and , sometimes, there is a growing climate of tension,
but, unfortunately, I think the plot was too predictable , and the sound effects were excessive, I’m afraid ( and the audience’s reaction, a brief laugh after some of those effects, too loud, confirms it ). From my point of view, the play would have required a bit more subtlety. What I liked the most, was the idea of the performance inside a performance, and the actors, although I expected more on Emilio Gutiérrez Caba’s part.
Maybe I was not on the mood for a thriller, ( or the more expectations, the more disappointment ), but, once again, I reckon how difficult is to meet the propitious circumstances to provoke an intense feeling into the audience.

I am thrilled with all the comments they are very interesting!! I agree with Ana about the noise, I read your comment first and then I read many others to the same effect, I also found it less frightening than the last time we saw it. It is fantastic to have Jaime and Hermi back because there we have a really professional comment: they are experts!! Susam and Maria I don´t know but very interesting ideas too. I´m going to call the theatre and tell them to have a look. And thanks everybody, I can´t mention the rest because I´m in a hurry to go back into the classroom! What a horrible prospect. "Thanks Michelle for the new heading! What would we do without you?" (I always end up saying:"What would we do without you?" when I email her but it´s absolutely true).

Hermy and Jaime I do not think anyone caan do it better. It´s a pleasure to read it,it´s so precise and accurate very well written and balanced.
thanks dakota for her tip about Fundación March. Go!

Thanks Carmen! I am happier for having answered well! ;) Now, let´s see how I do the composition of funny scene...

maria dijo...

oops, the composition of A funny scene... ;)

Dakota dijo...

I agree, Carmen. Maria's English has improved sensibly! If only people knew... On our forum, almost nobody writes, and it could do them so much good! Not any writing, of course: proofread writing, this is, writing and proofreading what you write, to avoid making mistakes you can prevent, and therefore, avoid fossilization!

Fossilization... it sounds so scary!

:D

Hello Folks! As our teacher Carmen says.

It is the first time I write in the blog and I hope you should forgive my mistakes.

About the Play: when I first saw Mr. Caba at his character, I thought that he was a little nervous about his colleague's death, Mr. Fernán Gómez. He seemed to have forgot his lines, he stuttered. I remembered that I thought "Poor man, they were really friends".
But the truth was that "that" was his character: A man who wants to tell a story and needs a "professional" actor (Mr. De Juan) who shows him how to do that.

How can a fabulous actor, veteran and award winner transform himself in an untrained, bad one?
That's one of the questions that the Audience could make themselves at the beginning of the play.
Not only does actors perform a play but also Audience cooperate with their imagination, and that's why "through the darkness of the stage appears the white, deformated, and misterious face of a young woman...." and you, inmediately, ask yourself: "Who is the Woman in Black?"

marta dijo...

O.E.,I am stupid not to have clicked that you are the old Etonian! Everybody recognises the abbreviation! Welcome to the club

Carmen dijo...

Hello María Luisa, well done with both inversions the true one and the dramatic!! Be careful with the verb, though,it ought to be"....do actors". Thanks for posting very good effort

Hello, this is a small opinion about Woman in Black, because the other day I wrote a large one and I could'n send it correctly, so I am trying it again. Thank you very much to give us the chance to read and to write in this lovely space. All the opinions are good and it is a good way to comunicate in english. I like the play very much It looked me fantastic, the sounds, the characters an so on really good. I hope anxious the next. Sorry about my mistakes. Merche.

Hello Carmen.
Don't be afraid. It was only a misprint, instead of "actor" I used "actors". Thank you very much for your advices.
