Hi, we are not sure what sort of performance we are going to see!! It may be too childish or adapted, but I think we are going, at least Marta is on the Sunday, 26th, at 8 pm.

I've tryed to find the school but I've not been able to.Are you sure it's in Modesto Lafuente 11?

Paloma dijo...

I’ve already found the school, is in Marillac. What happens is that you enter that school for García de Paredes. You may get tickets here: http://www.madridplayers.org/ReserveTicket.asp or visit this site:http://madridplayers.blogspot.com/2009/03/importance-of-being-earnest_28.html

Yesterday I enjoyed the play, not just the play I started to enjoy when I was waiting in the queue to enter the theatre because the whole world talking about how many times he had read the book, who was your favourite character, if they were going to understand or No, it was very emotional. In the queue there were teachers of many Language Schools all o them with their students, and excited because they are going to see the importance of Being Earnest in English.
When the play started was wonderful, because I realized that I can understand, and that was because some parts of the book, I almost knew by heart. Yesterday my favourite character was Algernon, he was played very well and he was, like I had imagined, elegant, well dressed, I also like Cecily, very sweet, imaginative and expressive.

I really enjoyed with Lady Bracknell and with every each character in the play.

I’ve liked the play very much, and for many reasons. First of all it’s been my first play entirely in English and without subtitles. I’ve understood nearly everything single word and, consequently, I was feeling happier and happier as the play was coming to its end. As I always told you, I particularly love plays with good scenery and beautiful clothes, I don’t know whether it is because I went to the theatre expecting something worse, but I’ve found both perfect. Even the hairstyles were good. I’ve been very surprised at Miss Prism bosom; she was wearing it in her waist as elderly women usually wear it.
I’ve also liked the acting; I hadn’t seen actors using their gestures for ages. Sometimes they were a bit exaggerated but this play allows it, even it is better if they aren’t plain.
I saw the play in Spanish last year, they didn’t make me laugh; but, this evening, in spite of knowing the argument, I’ve had a lot of fun.
In short, an unexpected surprise, very funny and quite well performed. Only one complain: MR. Wording and Gwendolyn were a bit overage, weren’t they?

I have enjoyed the play very much. In spite of not having read the book yet (now, I want to read it as soon as possible), I have understood the plot almost perfectly.

As 3rds are reading the book this year, I asked Belen, a 3rd, before the play started, and she explained many details to me; Belen, thank you very much, because it helped me a lot.

It was also very nice to meet my "classmate" (Paloma, Roberto, Rebeca, Raquel, etc) and our teachers there.

I agree with Paloma, Gwendolyn was a bit overage, but, in my opinion, she acted very well, she was my favourite actress.

I´ve enjoyed the play!the performance of some of the actors was really poor, I particularly disliked Cecily, with her American accent and I´m afraid that i did not like Algernon either, or Jack, he was too free with his gestures and in general the way he expressed himself. Remember that Jack was really serious!!
My favourite actors have been Prism, Gwendolen and Lady Bracknell, who, however should have been more firm, more severe, but on the whole, and considering that the text is so good I think it has been an enjoyable evening and that we have liked it a lot. As for the prize: cheappppppppppppp!

I would like to add something to my previous comment. In my opinión, Cecily didn´t project herself brilliantly. I mean, neither her voice nor her movements were projected in a masterly way.

I dreamed about the play last night (in English), great!

Thank you again to the teachers for giving us those unique opportunities.

It is always a pleasure to see any English play and I could not let this chance to see Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of being Earnest fly away. The text is marvellous, full of unforgettable quotes, irony and sarcasm which make you laugh. I liked the actors though they seemed to me inappropriately chosen. Jack was too old and some times excessive as Carmen has already said, Miss Fairfax was too mature as well, and Cecily speaking with the american accent made me a little bit disappointed. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it a lot not only because of the text itself but also because you can listen to a proper English accent (setting aside Cecily’s). By the way, who do you think spoke the language better? Some of you were able to notice that they pronounced the “r” strongly. I could not

I have read all your comments and I must say I agree with all which is surprising but true. I enjoyed the play very much, it is such a good play and so witty that I was laughing or at least smiling all the time. Paloma is right, when we went last year we didn´t laugh at all. The actors were tolerable and at least they made us laugh. The best, for me, and the best accent was Lady Bracknell(´s)though lacking in haughtiness, she was too sweet, one didn´t feel scared and I think she has to frighten a little. I agree that Cecily was the worst and that Jack or Algy were not perfect, for start Jack´s eyes were not blue, but I suppose it is difficult to find actors who are prepared to rehearse and do all this business which takes time and probably money. So on the whole a success and a very good evening.
The fact that the play was in English and with no subtitles a very good practice for your English

Hi!!
I don´t know how to start!! Many things come to me when I´m thinking of the play.
It was a wonderful play and, personally, it was an extraordinary experience having been working with this book in class. Besides, I was curious about how the adaptation was going to be made and I may say the director was very respectful of the original text, don´t you think?
Mar, there´s nothing to thanks for, it was a pleasure to enjoy the play with you.
Having read all your posts, I should say I agree with you. In my opinion, the worst actors were Cecily and Algy, she spoke in a too low voice and the latter made "strange movements" with his mouth making it difficult for me to follow him sometimes. Nevertheless, Gwendolen was relly good and her english accent was, for me, the best one. Lady Bracknell, although her pronunciation was good as well, sometimes she emphasized the "r" sound too much as you have mentioned, Roberto.
It wasn´t my first original-version play, I saw My Fair Lady at school but it shouldn´t have been so good if I remember nothing about it, however it has been the best play I´ve ever seen so far.

Oh what a pity not to go yesterday! (Had I gone, Carmen, I had given you my hailing!) As I see it was, at least, a play very interesting to see. With a great text like Wilde´s, it is not very difficult to do a good job, though The Spanish are experts in ruining masterpieces... I don´t think I would have been able to understand an English play without subtitles! So Congratulations! Let´s see if tomorrow we can stop reading subtitles in some moment!!!

Carmen dijo...

María of course you would have been able to understand it!!!!
I´m ever so glad that you liked it. We´ll go to the ones this company is doing in May, but we are so pushed for time!!! and with all these long weekénds!!!

paloma dijo...

Maria, I agree with Carmen, you would have understood everything, for sure. I did it and I’m not very good at listening.

María dijo...

Are the plays only performed on weekends?
Thanks Carmen and Paloma, but I think I would have been able to understand the whole meaning of the play, but not each single word. That´s what happens to me seeing plays in English with subtitles. I try to understand but can´t help reading... That´s something I have to improve and I´ll do.

Paloma dijo...

Maria I’ve discovered something; when you see a film or a ply with subtitles, you can’t help but reading, even if you try not to do it. However, if there are not subtitles, you make an unconscious effort to understand and you manage to do it. Mi son Miguel told me once: “You will never understand English if you always use subtitles, you should try not to have them, you’ll improve a lot your listening”. I did it and I realized it was true. I advise you to try it, you’ll be surprised, for sure.

María dijo...

I have to think of that as a kind of exercise. But I usually do it when watching films. But seeing a play, I don´t want to lose anything of the plot!! So I read and read, like yesterday. Anyway, thanks for the advise.
