Hello I’m Paloma from 4º G. In mu opinion this play is a very good example of classical Spanish Golden- Century theatre. If you like this kind of theatre, you’ll enjoy this performance. Perhaps the thing I most liked was the Music. It is played with old instruments and is very lively. Nevertheless there were two things I didn’t like at all. The first one was the change in appearance and century in the King. Of course Alfonso XI is not Enrique IV. There is no connection between them. Enrique was the King during Rojas life but the writer set the plot in the middle Ages not in his time. The second thing I didn’t like was the scenery, very poor and flat. I’ve never understood why the modern directors think they are better and wise tan the classical authors. Nowadays is in fashion to make changes in the plot and the sets and things aren’t respected as the writers establish them. It doesn’t matter if they were the best authors in the Spanish literature history. Do you understand what I mean? In my opinion is stupid to stage Felipe IV, perfectly recognizable and absolutely unmistakable, and expect you to believe him Alfonso XI. It makes no sense to me. By the way, in classical plays I like set. I don’t want to imagine a castle or a wood, I want to see them. That was the custom when this kind of plays was written. We have the right to have these plays as they were conceived. Shakespeare, Cervantes, Calderón, Lope and even Rojas deserve respect. They don’t need to be corrected.
Thanks for your comment which has been written using great vocabulary. There is the occasional mistake but you´ve made your point clear, and let me tell you that we are of a mind. I like to see the castle if we have to have one.
I've seen it and I liked the plot and I enjoy the verses. What I think it's really not useful at all is to use eighteenth century dresses quite romantic instead of those of sixteenth century, the time in which comedy was written. Neither did I like the lady's husband in his playing. In the moment in which the only exit way is to kill his wife in order to repair his honour he literally screams in scene. His loneliness and tragedy don't need to be screamed, are by theirselves dramatic enough.Carmen.
I left the theater with the feeling Do I have lost my ability of hearing?
I spent two hours with an horrible heat to try to understand the title of the play. And when Don Garcia delivered the sentence, I don´t known what I was thinking of... The case is that I didn´t hear it. Luckyly Carmen and her husband repeat me the sentence! Thanks!
The play was not very badly. However I prefer modern plays. Listen to the verses for so long is very heavy. But dances and songs were very nice.
I liked the text and the costumes very much, they even made the shoes in the fashion of the time. Maybe the dresses were too bright and rich for the Spanish court too austere to dress in what seemed to me the French style, but I still think they were nice and the effect was fantastic. I didn´t like the way the King was portraid as a comic, weak, stupid character he had no majesty, a medieval King was not one to laugh at, and I don´t think it was the author´s intention to make us giggle at the King. There was a problem with the movement on the stage too. From the left-hand side you could not see the actors talking for example in the last scene, we only saw the Queen´s back, the fool´s back and we heard the voices of the people talking but could not make out what they were saying, for the music playing at the same time muffled their words. The leading actress was too old for the role, I´m sorry to say. Abigail Tomey, a young actress who has done a lot of classical plays, very successfully would have made a perfect Blanca. She is good at acting and very pretty, (the actress was not bad but one could hardly see her as Blanca). What do you think? We saw her last year in "Un marido de ida y vuelta".
I agree with Marta concerning Abigail Tomey.Maria,I also found it impossible to understand the words, the understanding being hindered by the music, which was nice, very, but too loud!!!! I am with Carmen´s opinion that the leading actor made a very poor business of his lost honour. Blanca was definitely better and quite deserving when she escaped from her husband´s rage;My overall impression is, however, that it lacked emotion. After the interval there were moments of feeling but scarce. The worst, the conversation with two ladies in the foyer and one of my students; the things one of those ladies said about the play quite shocked me, what little understanding of the human heart! what a poor analysis of a work of art!Shocking, wasn´t it Lidia?
Hello, I'm Charo from 1th. I like the play. I enjoy with the music and the songs. I think they do very well. I'm agree with Marta: "The leading actress was too old".
Hello! I am Emi (5th A). I agree with all of you. I don´t understand why the director chose Felipe IV, a king who lived two centuries later, and why he is showed as a silly man. He is said to have been a real womanizer (Borbons have also been that), but of course he was not a stupid man, on the contrary he bought most of the pictures which are in El Prado nowadays.
Hello, I`m Fran from 3º C , It was the first time that I went to the theatre.. In my opinion it was the most beautiful thing I`ve ever seen because I like seeing films but the theatre it`s most lively than the cinema. About the play I think that it was very beautiful, the music was fantastic. Perhaps the scenery was smaller than I though but I like the colour and how was easy to change the scenery. The songs were very funny and lively and the actors were fantastic. I like the plot because introduce me in the history and you don`t like that “Garcia” kills her wife. Finally I think that I`ll repeat the experience and if someone tells me other play to see I`ll go. Bye
hello fran! That you like the theatre seeing a play for the first time is very great. There are a lot of plays you must see. For example you can go to the Alfil Theatre on Pez street. There are funny plays which are very cheap. Anyway, you can go with the EOI theatre club. We´ll go to see The woman in black next thursday. Watching movies is good, but the theatre is amazing, you´ll see!
Don`t worry Paloma! My english isn`t very well ... but the interesting thing is to improve the english little by little .. I`ll try to see the Woman in Black.. Thanks
Thanks for all the new comments!!! You can also write them in Spanish but I am very pleased you have chosen English!! Please continue. Well done Charo for your comment and Emi+Carmen for yours it´s very good practice for your English!Paloma I don´t know you but please go on with your comments we enjoy them. I am very glad we have introduced somebody to the world of the theatre!!
Thanks for your comments, Fran.I am very pleased to know that you enjoyed your first play.Your English is not bad for an intermediate student, and I´m sure it´ll improve a lot if you keep on working hard.
Hello Marta, Carmen is me, your sister and colleague! though amazed that you have not recognized me (Cristina did when she visited the blog,at once) I am sincerely grateful you for your compliments on my English and your advice: "write in English,it´s good practice",thanks I´ll try. Emi, It´s high time you visited the blog! you are quite a theatre expert!Fran,it is very nice to know that you´ve enjoyed it; for teachers, trying always, succeeding rarely, your post is hope! What happened in the foyer, Maria? This extraordinary lady, critized the play because García wanted to kill his wife because she had been the cause of hazarding his honour. She indignantly protested that this could not be. She totally misunderstood the play and the time when it had been written and failed to comprehend the different time, or to bring it to the present period if possible!A limited mind and mentality.
Carmen I did recognise you, I was talking to one of my students in the 5th form who happens to be called Carmen too and who wrote something in the blog. That´s why I put a + between the names of both my students!
Hii!!! I didn`t know that you are a teacher Marte :p I want to meet english people to speak english because I`m used to speaking english because when I talk I have a lot of mistakes.. Do you know anywhere to meet english people? kisses
Yes Frank I Know one. It's Books and Coffe in Espiritu santo, very near San Bernardo. The bar is quite a small one and is situated in a corner in the left side of the street, going down. Every Wednesday and Thursday from about 8,30 to 11 or so you can speak English with all kind of people. I've gone there several times and I think it's wonderful. You lose your fear and become more confident every time you go there. Tomorrow i'll go with a friend from 9 to 10. If you go there ask for me.
Thanks for your new post, Paloma.I´m glad to know that at least some of you are interested in speaking English outside the classroom. I´ll recommend the place to all my students. Frank, you can´t miss it,I´m convinced it will be worth going to that pub and meeting other English speaking people.
Frank in the language school there are foreign students leave a message in the Spanish department to be given to the students who are interested in dating with Spanish people to talk in both languages, that could be a way or going to Irish pubs, that´s also a good chance.
Ohhh! that`s a great idea.. I don`t know anything about the spanish departament. The Irish Pub isn`t a good idea because last year (when I arrived to Madrid the first time) I went to Oneil´s pub near of sol and I only met one man who is from Ireland, there are more spanish than people who speaks english :( Paloma thanks for the tip but today I can`t go because I just read your message. Next week I`m going to there.. kisses :p
Ohhh! Nobody writes here... Why we don`t speak? Tomorrow I try to go to Books and Coffee! in san bernardo! I hope dont forget it :p Paloma Will you go tomorrow? If someone wants to come with me please writes me and we are going together :p Kissess
