Other plays / Otras obras

Here's a thread for sharing info on other plays which are on, and/or sending comments. We could start a thread per month, with this title, if you like, or have just this November thread for all "Other plays" during this course. Whatever you prefer! Just tell us.

I think a permanent one would be fine. What do you suggest?

I think it is a good idea for people like me who cannot see plays during the week because of their jobs or whatever reason but they can on the weekends.
Thank you for this opportunity and I promise you to write again on the weblog

There is very interesting and funny play that we can see at Maria Guerrero's Theater till Christmas: "Las visitas deberían estar prohibidas en el Código Penal". It is based on texts by Miguel Mihura and directed by Ernesto Caballero. If you want to have a good time don't miss this oportunity...

Antonio I am so glad we are a help! Please continue writing it´s a very good exercise!

I saw the film of Jane Austen and I liked it. I think the writer knew what she wanted: independence. She wished for the full independence that she renounced his love for Mr Lefroy. Austen lived without getting married, maybe she was unhappy, but became independent. However, her stories have happy end. That caught my attention. Perhaps her works were (past proper subjunctive, Is it used well?) her dreams.
I don´t know why Anne Hathaway interprets the role of Jane Austen, if the actress was born in Brooklyn... Kate Winslet would have been better...

María, I am amazed at your improvement, the more you write the better you do it; that "were" is factual, however. Stories have A happy end,the rest is fantastic. I haven´t seen the film yet and is out!! I´ll wait for the DVD

I´m wrinting again just as I promised. Well, last week I saw Casandra`s dream directed by Woody Allen and I think it´s not bad for entertainment and to improve your hearing in English as well, but if you don´t like Woody, stay home or do whatever you wish.
bye

I went to see Jane Austen, and I firmly believe that the movie was really extraordinary and romantic. I loved it so much however as a huge different from other american movies the end was not a happy one.

Yesterday I went to the theatre to see Cinderella. I liked it very much because I love musicals and it was almost a musical. I didn’t understand too much but it was funny, the actors very friendly and there were musicians. I think they did a very good work. It was strange when the Prince’s mother, the Queen (she looked like the Queen Elizabeth), appeared in the stage and the musicians plaid the English national anthem, A lot of people stood up until it finished.

I´ve read there is a very interesting Macbeth in London with Ewan Macgregor (I´m not sure about spelling but apparently he is a very well-known actor and very handsome too) in the role of Iago. He has certain difficulties with the verse but still the English are paying through the nose to see him! Something scandalous. If anybody goes to London try to buy tickets, they sell ten a day!

The other day I went to La Abadía to see the play Arlequín. I am not sure about the exact title. The acting quite good. I specially liked the actor who was doing the immigrant, he imitated the accent very well, and so did the girl who did the Southamerican servant. The plot was a good but I am afraid I found it confusing, at the beginning and I also found it VERY LONG. I don´t see why they didn´t cut it a little. It seemed something quite easy to do. I didn´t like the lesbic touches in the plot either, were they necessary? And if so why? I don´t think that that made the play any better, on the contrary. However I think it was interesting to watch.

The title of the play I commented is: Argelino servidor de dos amos in Abdía theatre. I got it wrong, sorry, and I think it is worth seeing though I am afraid we are not going to be able to organise it because it´s on only for a month and most of that month we are away!

The play 'Antígona' is in the theatre Lagrada until 29th January. It costs 10 euros in Atrapalo.com and many people have recommended it to me, two good reasons for going, after Christmas... Merry Christmas!

This is a film I´ve watched and recommend:"Lions for Lambs" with Robert Redford. Good and well acted, interesting to. Fantastic dialogues in the platonic school

Anónimo dijo...

I have also watched it. I adore Meryl Streep in all of her films! I liked the film very much because of his impartiality, something difficult to get in political films like that. Maybe I had suppressed the warlike acts, I think that they weren´t necessary... However, of course, well done Redford!
I recommend 'Eastern Promises', a very hard film with good actors... isn´t it, Noemi?? ;)

Anónimo dijo...

María, you have gotten that I went to the cinema and that I wrote in the blog! You are the best! Yes, it is an interesting film and it is also easy to understand. And if you like Viggo Mortensen you will see him stark naked in a very awkward situation... But, don,t go with your children, it´s a little heavy.

I´ve watched Elizabeth I, with Helen Mirren. It is a fantastic film, very well acted, all of them were made up and dressed perfectly!
The Queen exercises her authority with firm hand in the British Court, but she is also a little bit weak when she is in love. She is a great person, independently of her believes or her political behaviours.
Now I want to watch the film again, with spanish subtitles, because I was a little lost at particular moments, in the second DVD...

First, Happy New Year for everybody.
I`ve just read Marta and Maria`s comments about the film Lions for Lambs and I also saw it some weeks ago and I think like you: interesting film, good plot, excelent cast mainly Meryl and not bad Robert, concernig Tom so,so... excepting I felt there was an important politic connotation that, however, is not something bad. Moreover, I find it necessary to develop this movie and it makes you think, isn`t it?

Anónimo dijo...

Yes, there was a politic connotation obviously, and I liked it. I was only referring to the warlike acts. I think that you could understand the boys´situation without that images in the plane or in the mountain when they were surrounded by many taliban... That only used for giving violence to a film which didn´t need it. Don´t you think?

I´ve just watched The Quiet Man which Carmen recommended us. It tells a story about a man who moved from the USA to a little town in Ireland, where he was born, to reclaim his family´s farm. There he fell in love with a woman whose brother refused the wedding and also to allow his sister the full dowry. The woman was resolved to obtain her dowry and believed that her husband was coward because not to fight for it. The reason why he didn´t fight was that he was traumatized by his killing as boxer in the ring. Of course, in the end they fought...
In this film, women are treated with inferiority, which were usual in films at the middle of the last century. Somebody said this phrase: 'Take this rod to beating your dear wife'. The worst of that is that some crazy men yet think of women like that.

Anónimo dijo...

Maria, I completely agree with you but nowdays the most important thing in film industry is to sell as much as posible and so, in order to get this goal production companies do whatever they can despite this implies to create movies with too much violence, sex...
On the other hand, I didn`t see The quiet man but I´ll try to go to the cinema if I have time and so I will be able to comment on it.

I've just seen "Argelino servidor de dos amos" at La Abadia and I'm still wondering about what really disliked me in this play which shows a lot of good theatrical job. I know very well the Goldoni original and although this remake has some brilliant flashes I still think a good performance of the original play, as it happens to see in Italy, is much better than this one. The contradictions between slaves and rich people are equally shown in Goldoni and you don't need to "explain"them. I think sexual scenes and others are redundant because nothing is added to the drama. It's a bit touching to see so much work to add pratically nothing.

A very clever comment,as yours usually are. I agree with you, I was also disappointed with the play and, in spite of not having seen the original I felt that it must have been much better. You disliked the play and so did I it was boring, long, repetitive and predictable. The fact that the poor Algerian, or from wherever, could not eat nearly drove me round the bend specially in that scene where, although he was serving two tables he couln´t nick anything! I also think that the little act of lesbianism was innecessary as it added only confussion, it was probably inserted there to make the play more alluring and frankly, we are well over the sexual revolution.
