Do you know that the manuscript "Las bizarrías de Belisa" is in The British Museum of London? This is the first play of the Young National Company of Classic Theatre and the play takes place in the 20s.

Well I have enjoyed the play very much,in spite of not being in favour of those modern changes that are often to the detriment of the text which is, as was the case in this play, very nice. The actors were quite good, the only one I didn´t really like was D.Juan, but the Count was funny and he managed to make a very stupid count. The servants, specially Tello, were great. The ladies were solid, succeding in transmitting both comicity and seriousness. I never expected it to be such fun, although there were parts that I found deficient, the music was nice and it helped portray the Count´s stupidity. There was dynamism which is not often seen in Spanish plays, the movement on stage was also good in my opinion. Worth seeing that´s my veredict!

Oh my God! What was that?

I didn’t like at all, with all my respects for the actors and actresses and for all the people who liked it.

I hadn’t prepared my mind to assimilate that mixture between a classical play and a musical one. Too modern for me.

And, what about Count Enrique? Perhaps the inspiration of this performance was our dear “Pocholo”. I never saw anything like that, and probably I will never forget it.

Good for Tello.

There are things that I don’t like, as D. Juan and perhaps as the outlandish Count Enrique, but in general I enjoyed the play. I don’t mind if a classic play is performed like modern play. There are plays in modern version like Romeo and Juliet or Rigoletto by Verdi that they were wonderful.

In spite of the bad reviews of my class mates, I enjoyed the play! Al least, I liked it more than 'Del rey abajo ninguno'. Yesterday, the play defied my imagination,it surprised me, and it is always good! Don´t you think so? I associated Pavón with clasical or baroque works of Spanish theatre, but Eduardo Velasco is out of the ordinary: the music, the grand piano, the chairs, Caprile's wonderful dresses... But the verses were the verses of Lope. Sorry, Paloma, but, from my humble point of view, I don´t agree with you...

I really liked the play.it was everything in old spanish.sometimes it was a little bit scaring but i had real fun.in my oppinion all the characters were funny.one of the things i liked the most was that mix between musical comedy and classical theater (the Count as Fred Astaire).I also liked capriles' designs for this play.
The plot is typical of Lope de Vega.Don't miss it

Obviously there's no accounting for taste.

Wow!I really enjoyed those comments! Hermi and Jaime´s wonderful as usual, you really put in words what we see. I couldn´t agree more I also liked the play very much. Paloma you defend your point very well, the sonnet is beautiful and what you say about the "ruu ruu" is not only demolishing but also true. I hadn´t seen it in that light but after your comment I couldn´t agree more, they distroyed the beauty of the verse. However I liked the play, I enjoyed it, maybe a bit of the beauty was lost but the commicity was successfully put across, and on the whole it was well-balanced. "Hope" a very good comment, you have communicated yourself very well. Well done everybody and thanks, it´s such fun reading this....

Cristina now I realise it is you!!! I agree with what yousay thanks for posting

Imagine you are very fond of Gothic art especially the French one because you think it’s the purest one. Finally, after a long time trying it, you get to travel to Paris to se Notre Dame, particularly you want admire de stained glass windows.
Imagine that the first think you hear when you enter the cathedral is rock music. After that you realised that the whole place is decorated with paintings from Warhol and the most beautiful window is surrounded by pieces of simple glass from ordinary bottles. What would you have thought?
Perhaps you would say Warhol is not the right person to decorate a Cathedral. He’s great to a modern building or to be in a Museum of Modern Art, but not in Notre Dame. The same could be said for the music. You usually don’t expect to listen to Rock and Roll in a church like that.
If someone tells you that the glasses around the window are to emphasise it perhaps you would be quite surprised. If in addition you had seen inside the place a kissing competition and you would stay next to the loudspeaker hearing the music, perhaps, and only perhaps, you would be “rather” disappointed. Or not?

Anónimo dijo...

Do you understand that for some people a Gothic Cathedral is such a beautiful thing that it didn't need nothing more to be perfect?
Some things are so good as they are that they cannot be improved.
Notre Dame it's a jewel in itself, it don't need Warhol to be different or more mdern. The extra things only get hide the original beautis of the building. A warhol's painting cover the stone sculptures which are one of the most important part on this kind of construction.
The rock music break the atmosphere, the silence and the tranquility typical in cathedrals.

Anónimo dijo...

Yes, you have the reason partly, however, when people passed near the church or the cathedral, having heard this extraordinary sounds, maybe they would have come in. And if they hadn´t listened to this music, they wouldn´t have come in and wouldn´t go by without seeing this wonderful work of art like Notre Dame. However, I must say that I consider hideous to cover the main stained-glass window, but I could bear the Warhol exhibition and the Rock and Roll. Maybe I am very avant-garde. When all's said and done, into the church it sounds English rock sometimes, though with religious lyrics. I know it because I sang in the church´s choral... ;)
As far as I am concerned, Eduardo velasco doesn´t have included so many "extras" to alter substantially the Lope´s work, perfect by itself, as you say, but he has wanted to attract attention of other kind of public who usually doesn´t go to the Pavon Theatre. In fact, the other day there was a lot of children en the audience, a fact which is unusual there.

Well, after reading all the coments I want to say that in my opinion the play is quite good and I supposed they have try to modernize the classic play the problem is that may be some people hoped a really classic performance and they have not be able to see the play as a modern one with a touch of classic. I have always opened my mind for new things and I respected all the coments but I liked the play very much.
