The play sounds well, has many good reviews. It´s based on the "Scopes Trial", an American legal case that tested the Butler Act, which made it unlawful, in any state-funded educational establishment in Tennessee, "to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals." The case was a critical turning point in the United States' creation-evolution controversy. (Source: Wikipedia) Hence the monkey...

I will manage to go, even if this week end I am engaged in a stand at Biocultura, where I also have a speech Friday 3 P.M.
But I hope to be able to go and stay for TBAT (the bier after theatre)
Why so few people from 5º is attending the blogs?

Anónimo dijo...

well, how can yoi ask that question?????? because people are lazy and in spite of having such a good opportunity of practising the language they do nottttttttt!!!! Yes lots of other adjectives occur to me as well.

I’m looking forward seeing this play. I’ve read the argument and the history of the trial on internet and it strikes me as being really interesting. The subject interests me a lot and is a live issue in The USA nowadays since there is taking place a lot of conversions to Evangelical Church during Bush tern of office. Some branches of this church support creationism. Even Sarah Palling told once (She is a Pentecostal) that creationism should be taught at schools as well as evolution.

Anónimo dijo...

Sorry: looking forward to seeing

Anónimo dijo...

Yes!!! I'm also looking forward to seeing this play.
The argument seems really interesting as you said Paloma it's live issue the USA.

Ok. As we have said in class, we are going to meet before the play, at 19.30 at the door of the theatre, in order to have a dinner together. If you want to join us, be at that hour in that place.

More information: Tomorrow I have met with Mark, an English boy who also was seeing Sonata de Otoño. He liked it so we could argue... If you want to join us (I repite myself), be at 8.30 p.m. at Bear Statue. ok??

Anónimo dijo...

Give me information please in case I could attend.XXX for everyone!!

Anónimo dijo...

Yes, it is that guy we met in the summer. I have met with him tomorrow at 8.30 at Bear Statue (Sol), but now I don´t know if it is possible, because I may go to the theater. But if I could finally attend, I´ll post it here, ok??

Anónimo dijo...

I can attend to the meeting. I´m going to the theatre. It´s Sweeney Todd, if someone wants to come, call me.

Anónimo dijo...

I really enjoyed the play, even though it lasted three hours, in the end my bones being paralysed with such an uncomfortable seat. Audience settled as one more character, players performed the trail quite credibly without using more than three of them so as to develop the story. Speeches flowed fluently as if the performance were improvised. Besides, I was amazed of listening to so different an attitude from the accused and the accuser’s side. They expressed firmly reasons supporting their beliefs and it astonishes you the fact that both sides want us to focus on what they are interested in instead of showing facts plainly as they are.

I have trouble writing today. I’m only able to do it with one hand which is slow a tedious. So, I beg your pardon for the mistakes.
About the play:
The theatre was, as is the Matadero, disgusting. I don’t see anywhere the beauty of filth, neglect and soot. For me it was terrible to see a trial in such a place. As the wall behind the actors was a ruin, the whole situation lost part of its credibility, and I found it difficult to concentrate and immerse myself in the action. I was always conscious I was seen a play. The seats weren’t very comfortable either and it was hot.
Te actors were actors and did their work. Do you regard this statement as a truism? It is not at all, think carefully about it.
The story line was quite interesting and you don’t felt bored. Perhaps a bit tired because the actors used to speak quite quickly and it being difficult to understand what they were saying, you had to read the text.
In short: an interesting play to while away an evening but not really useful to practise your listening comprehension.

Anónimo dijo...

Hi everybody!
In my opinion the play was very interesting and funny.
I really enjoyed it. Despite as Roberto's says after 3 hours I felt quite unconfortable on those seats.
I enjoyed the performance of the actors and the way they make the audience to be part of the play.
I also agree with you Roberto, the firmly reasons they give to support their beliefs are quite interesting.

Anónimo dijo...

I´ve read your comments and I´m glad you liked the play. Pity that they don´t have better stalls, it´s quite a well-known theatre, of the alternative ones I mean.
Suggestion why not go to see the one Maribel Verdú is doing? Coppola´s been with his daughter maybe it is worth it.

Anónimo dijo...

I liked it! In spite of three hours on a painful chair and the extra warm temperature!I didn´t find it too difficult to understand except for those quick speeches they dropped.Don´t you think that the fact they were neither British nor American made it easier to grasp?
They were very fluent speaking and funny when acting so they transformed an intricate legal case into an amusing one, using comical faces and a witty body language.

About a new play, the one Marta says has received very good critics and a pair of my relatives have gone and labelled it as hilarious.Good actors and actresses
an original script and dashes.I would love to go to see it!!!

Anónimo dijo...

As for the theatre, I´m of the same opinion as Paloma, I don´t find any pleasure in sitting on those uncomfortable seats facing a stage that reminds you of a derelict building.
However, the play made up for the three hours which made my legs go numb. The three actors gave an impressive performance, especially Cleiren and Vercruyssen who took on all the other roles: the members of the jury, the witnesses, the other lawyers,...and, together with the comic relief provided by the judge, managed to keep the audience interested to the last minute.
Besides the enjoyable three-hour show,it was also good practice for students. The actors´ beautiful English and the repetition of the vocabulary are highly beneficial. Who will not be familiar now with terms such as bigotry, adjournment, overrule an objection, defendant, your Honour ?

Anónimo dijo...

Hi everybody, I know I do not write very often in the blog, but in this ocasion I want to say I agree with Cristina, when you are looking a good performance o show it is not very important the place, I have been and listen many plays in very stranges places, for example I listen a concert in a cave and for me it was a fantastic experience, anyway, thanks Carmen to give us the opportunity to go to the theatre. I really miss you in the theatre. I like the play very much, the actors with a very good pronuntiation and the comunication with the audience liked me extraordinary. I enjoyed too much.

Anónimo dijo...

I am sorry, when I have read my comment I realize there are some mistakes, I will try do not commit them in the future. I am sorry again.

Anónimo dijo...

The play was very interesting. It is quite amazing that not so much time ago a so established theory as the evolution one is, provoked so much discussion. I think that at this time in Europe no one would discuss it. In the USA people’s mind is more conservative than here, existing a big difference between the different states. For instance in Texas or Tennessee most of the population is the typical conservative American farmer. The south has been from the beginning the most traditional states, starting when they supported slavery until nowadays when the republic party always wins easily.

Anónimo dijo...

The play amazed me. I didn´t expected such a good perfomance. I liked also the place. The fact that three actors performed several characters on stage, and the scenary made me imagine everything! And it is not very usual to imagine watching a play, it being more like a film than like a book. It was the best for me together with the judge, very handsome, whom I understood perfectly!
Nobody has mentioned that we have an actor among us!! ;)

Anónimo dijo...

I agree with you Jaime about American´s conservativity, which sometimes makes them act blindly, supported by a false faith. We´ll see what happens tomorrow! There is a special programme in TVE 1 about elections and I´ve seen that José María Peredo Pombo is participating!

Anónimo dijo...

"I didn´t expect", I wanted to say. Sorry!

Anónimo dijo...

Hi everybody!
I liked very much the play. The plot was very interesting and the actors perfomance was fantastic. I enjoyed it so much that, for a while, they made me fosget the time we were sitting there. I understood quite well the actors, except when they spoke quickly. However, I couldn´t understand every single word and sometimes I had to look at the "subtitles", and it is this that I didn´t like at all. The "subtitles" must be in English, because if you read something in Spanish you can´t listen to it in Englihs.

Anónimo dijo...

Hi everybody!! I´m sorry to say that I don´t agree with most of you..But it is a matter of taste...I didn´t like the play perhaps due to the subject that was treated...For me it was treated in a way too heavy and in a very slowly way ( 3 hours long!!). I absolutely agree with Paloma and Cristina that the stage was grotty and the seats very uncomfortable for a play of three hours.

I admired the capacity of the actors to memorize each character. The best actor for me was the one who did the Judge, He spoke very slowly and I could understood everything he said. On the contrary the actor that was bald spoke very quickly and it was really difficult for me to understand him, I had to read the subtitles most of the time he was speaking. And what about the jury, they had a lot of charm, specially one of our class mates ;-), but they had to move many times from their seats during the play for doing nothing. It would have been the same if they have put some dolls in the jury seats...¿?

Anónimo dijo...

Who is the actor???? and what was his performance like????
I´m glad that most of you understood and have liked at least some of it. Roberto your ccomment is very good, very balanced and complete, rounded a good review. the best,so far; well done!
Yes we will organixe the one Marta says, it´ll be our next.

Anónimo dijo...

Anónimo?
It´s me,Silvia,5ºc.
This is the second time I have to write it!
The first time it dissapeared from my screen!

Anónimo dijo...

Hahaha! It must be the hour,It´s too late!
I´m in 5ºB
GOOD NIGHT !!!

Anónimo dijo...

Thank you Carmen. I appreciate your comment.

What actor do you mean? the one speaking slowly or the ohter. The latter spoke as if he was doing it in the real life, however, the judge did it like a theatre actor usually does.

Anónimo dijo...

there were 3 actors. The one who played the role of the judge, that was easy to understand, and there was another one whose english was quite good for me to understand. The most difficult to understand for me was the actor that was bald, the one that made the introduction with the judge. He spoke very quickly, he could have thought that the public was formed by spanish so he could had made an effort and spoke a little bit more slowly.

Anónimo dijo...

Hi,I don´t know what happened yesterday with my comments. One dissapeared from my screen and the next I wrote is not here now! but I saw it yesterday it was number 31 I think!
Well I just wanted to say that asking for volunteers is a common practise in this theatre,I had already been warned(by a relative) about the possibility of being set on the spot(poner en el aprieto)

As for the actors, Elena M., I´m afraid they drop it as they learn it.Don´t you remember at the beginning when the judge was translating,he said Oh I´m glad to see everybody speaks English here!?

why did they have to take so many people from the public? because how could they afford 12 more actors charging 8 euros a ticket???
Hahaha!!!
That´s only a joke!!

Anónimo dijo...

I forgot to say that I was not impressed by the judge playing,He had short speeches not as the other two actors both of which had extense interventions.
I think his were too simple.Obviously that made it easy for us to understand and helped to lighten the whole play( in the sight of its length)

Anónimo dijo...

I agree with you Silvia related to your last comment.

Hello Marta and Carmen,
I'm Elena García, former student of EOI with Marta. I went to the theatre with some classmates (we finished the translation and interpreting course) and we really enjoyed the play. They were delighted to practice English out of the classroom.
Carmen, I'm very grateful for getting the tickets as we arranged.
See you next 27.nov.
