As we miss Marta, and her amazing work organizing the School's outings to the theatre, we're starting a thread in case somebody else does, or in case people wish to suggest plays for us to see.

Wonderful thread! thanks for the shop advice since I always find it difficult to find a different gift for show business fans. Hug to every one
I couln´t go to see "The Taming of the Shrew" (12th October is the last day). But if some of you could go, comment it!
At Círculo de Bellas Artes, "Sonata de Otoño" is being performed. Marisa Paredes is the main character, who is having very goods rewievs. We may see it...
I'm going on Saturday with my parents, so I will tell you how it was.
This is a fantastic thread, thanks for this1 I also miss you all and the outings to the theatre.
I can´t organise them but would love to go to Sonata de Otoño, the reviews are good and we´ve never seen Marisa Paredes so I it´s a good opportunity to see her and the play.
I´m also interested in the one Maribel Verdú and Aitana are doing, let´s see if they are good as play actresses. I doubt it but why not go and check.
The one in the Comedia Theatre with Caprile as the designer is also interesting in my opinion, the classics are always worth seeing so that´s another.
I haven´t seen the programme for the Autumn Festival but I´m sure there must be something nice.
Lots of love
As for the Autumn Festival, there is at least this play in English: "The Collected Works of Billy the Kid" (also at Círculo de Bellas Artes). From 15th October to 18th November.
María thanks, it must be American but probably worth going to.
Last Saturday I went to see The Taming of the Shrew and I enjoyed it a lot. As any of the plays of Shakespeare’s we have seen last year, plain stage is enough to show us how the Master’s talented mind works. Having been written as a play into another play, you keep anxious to find out whether Petruchio will be able to get on with the “savage” Katherina and it is Shakespeare’s dexterety, of which he makes good use as he keeps us waiting for a long time till the couple is on stage, that makes your impatience increases.
As for the characters performing the play, I was content with all of them even though I have not seen the comedy before and therefore I lack of perspective to make a comparison. Petruchio was splendid in my opinion.
Any way, I will try to read the play so that I might check whether this adaptation is loyal to the original one or not.
testing
well deserved section and praise, Marta, congratulations; it´s very hard work to maintain the enthusiasm for the theatre for such a long time and so successfully.
Glad you went, roberto. I´ll get back with some quotes when I have time, I seem to be forever in front of the computer reading and answering!!
Carmen, it´s true: "The Collected Works of Billy the Kid" was performed last year. I am not so good looking for at Internet after all... Sorry!
You are good at everything, María
Exploring the labyrinth of this blog I discovered that I should post a suggestion here and not where I previously did. I propose to evaluate the possibility to see together the Auto de los Reyes Magos, directed by Ana Zamora, that will be at the Teatro de la Abadía in December http://www.teatroabadia.com/temporada/ficha.php?id_obra=7 Alicia Lázaro, who directs the music of Las manos blancas no ofenden, is also responsible of the music in this play. She always do a great job arranging period music performed with period instruments with the addition when needed of “bridges” of her own hand in the proper style. May be we can wait, listen "Las Manos..." and then decide...
October 30 and 31 and November 1rst and 2nd BIOCULTURA will take place in Madrid. I imagine most people already know what it is about. I will be at Equanimal stand Saturday 1rst afternoon and Sunday all the day. Friday 3 O'clock I will present a speech. I would be glad to see class mates visiting the stand! We also have Earthlings, a Shaun Monson movie in DVD, masterly narrated by Joachim Phoenix who, even being unashamedly American, has a second to no one pronunciation.
Alessandro, thanks. I usually love Abadia´s plays, except for "Play Strindberg"...
Another good play we could see is "Sweeney Todd" at Teatro Español. It not being in English, is set in London.
Thanks Carmen for saying that. I wish it was true!!!
I am looking for more information about this particular version, but it looks interesting. I somebody is still not an English baroque fan, I will say that Dido&Eneas is the only opera composed by the gian English musician Henry Purcell.

It will be performed Saturday November 8 and Sunday 9.
I will not probably be able to go because i will probably go to the Bull of Medinaceli. Should anybody join can contact me directly.
HAMLET comes to Madrid in December!! At María Guerrero Theatre!!
Fallen from heaven, or from the sky, seems to be a very interesting proposition. A friend of mine is involved in the project, and tol me about this some time ago. He told me that the performers will be half professional actors, and half real homeless, interpreting themselves. It will be performed just four times.

Hi, everyone ! I’m glad to write in the blog again.
I strongly recommend "Sweeney Todd", Stephen Sondheim's most acclaimed musical: it's really worth seeing, though you are not to see a mild , happy story
( you ought to know, the complete name of the original musical is "Sweeney Todd: the demon barber of Fleet Street" ).
The harsh streets of London in the middle XIX century, with its gloomy atmosphere, are the setting of this story of tragedy and revenge. Macabre as it is, the story has a heavy dose of black humour.
The score is really brilliant, with beautiful and lyrical songs
( you're sure to know the theme "Not while I'm around", it was very popular by Barbra Streisand ) and others which will cause you a feeling of uneasiness ( your hair will stand on end when listening "The ballad of Sweeney Todd", the theme which opens the musical and recurs several times throughout the show, performed by an excellent chorus )
The main actors are terrific: Vicky Peña is masterly playing the role of the amoral but funny Mrs. Lovett, and Joan Crosas fills the stage as Sweeney, with his impressive presence and deep voice; but in this play all the cast is remarkable, brilliantly directed by Mario Gas. The scenography is very effective as well.
One more thing, even though you know the story through the film made by Tim Burton, the musical will surprise you, it's certainly far better than the film. And maybe you don´t know that Mario Gas's version was first showed in Barcelona in 1995, with mostly the same cast , and two years later in Madrid ( where I saw it for the first time ) being a great success of public and critic and winning many awards.
I hope all of you go and see it, I’m sure you won’t regret.
Susan, thank you very much for your review. It´s fantastic. Everybody says the same as you. That´s why I want to go, but I don´t find anyone who wants to come with me, isn´t it sad?? Everybody hates musical plays which I adore!
Maria,
I'll go with you, and maybe I can get tickets for free! I know someone working there!
Kissses
I love you, Nataly
I´m going to see “Casa de muñecas” on the 13th November, in case you want to join me.
"Casa de Muñecas" I read the book a few years ago and I loved it!
Of course I'd like to join you!
Tell me how much it cost in order to give you the money.
Kisses
I´m going to see Muñecas next wednesday 5th November, ok? Get your tickets at Atrapalo.
Nataly, I´d like to see Sweeney from monday to friday, not at the weekend. Could you?
Yesterday we say Sweeney Todd. How wonderful a thriller musical which I recommend you!! All of them have powerful voices; the costume is really victorian, very appropiated to London slum area, the Fleet Street; the gloomy make-up and the scary atmosphere created a perfect dramatization, directed by Mario Gas, one of the best in Spain.
Vicky Peña is spectacular, great! Please, don´t miss it!
I went yesterday to see “Caídos del cielo” by Teatro del Alma www.caidosdelcielo.es . It will be on stage today and tomorrow. It was wonderful. It is acted by professional actors and also many homeless that have been working very hard for two years. It is very difficult to know who is who. I feel so angry having seen such an awful thing like the pretentious “Sonata de otoño” last week, with totally disappointing text and actors, even with Mrs. Paredes that was recently appointed with the Medal of the Arts (what can one anyway expect from somebody who accepts the same prize given to a bullfighter?). Caídos del cielo is fresh, amusing even if it makes you drop a tear very often, with a clear and strong social message. No pretentious at all, but with a very high standard. I strongly suggest everybody not to miss it!
Today and tomorrow "Doll´s house" by Ibsen is being performed at Tarambana Theatre. You can find tickets at Atrapalo for 7 euros. I´m going today in case you want to attend with me and some friends.
This play established a new genre of modern drama; prior to A Doll's House, contemporary plays were usually historical romances or contrived comedy of manners. Ibsen is known as the "father of modern drama" because he elevated theatre from entertainment to a forum for exposing social problems. Ibsen broke away from the romantic tradition with his realistic portrayals of individual characters and his focus on psychological concerns as he sought to portray the real world, especially the position of women in society.
Doll´s house was great. I hadn´t been before in that theater, which being really small, had magic. I loved it. It is incredible how good a play can be performed and how few people can take advantage of it. Alternative theaters usually are better, in general.
As for Sweeney Todd, I totally agree with Susan. I liked Vicky Peña very much! Even I´m thinking of going again. At least, I´m going to an special day when actors and Mario Gas are giving a "lecture". Very interesting, don´t you think?? If you have not gone yet, go, don´t miss it, it´s worth seeing indeed!
When it will be that "lecture"???
I would like to attend!
21st November, but I don´t remember now the hour. Come with me Nataly!
For sure I'll go with you!
See you!!

Hamlet
William Shakespeare
And this one:
Otelo, el moro de Venecia
(TEATRO VICTORIA)
Autor: William Shakespeare
Versión: Giraldo Moisés Cárdenas y Paloma Mejía
Dirección: Giraldo Moisés Cárdenas
Coreografía: Paloma Mejía
Intérprete: Compañía Máscara Laroye
Thanks for the information! Hamlet will be performed from the 4th of December at María Guerrero, as I read some days ago.
I´ve been to EL BURLADOR DE SEVILLA and I quite liked it. It had a lot of singing but on the whole I think it is worthwhile. Bellas Artes Theatre
Oh really? I wanted to see the play till saw that Fran Perea was the main character. I didn´t know either there was a lot of singing, which I usually like. Despite your good review I am not convinced... You say you think it is worthwhile, so you seem not to be so convinced... ;)
Thank you Marta for your advice! I'll take it into account!
I wanted to recommend you all "Otelo, el moro de Venecia", it's also worthwhile! I went to see it last saturday and I really enjoyed it!!
I´ve been to see the play "La omisión de la familia Coleman" It is very good I recommend it, the acting is something different.
If you want to have some fun, go to see "En ocasiones veo armarios". It´s very funny and has also a good message. It´s at Teatro Alfil.

From 3/12 to 11/01
We went to see the play yesterday evening. I strongly recommend it to you. Everything there is perfect, from the smell, (yes, it smells of incense), to the light and the environment. The clothes, the colours, the music (genuine medieval music played with authentic medieval instruments, some of them surprising), and, most important, the language, immerse yourself in the play to the extent of forgetting the time.
There is only a "problem", but, even this, is better for us: the texts are the original ones, but the pronunciation is not the medieval one. Those of you who have studied Literature or Spanish philology perhaps would be a little disappointed, but, for the rest of us understand the language becomes easier.
I know I should post this in the other blog but since the play is shown during very little time I want to be sure you read the advice. I addition I wasn’t sure were to post it.
January the 11th is the last session of Auto de los Reyes Magos. Everybody I´ve asked has liked it. I´d like to go to see it. Does some of you want to go with me?? It costs 20 euros
Hi I'd like to congratulate you for such a terrific quality forum!
Was thinking this would be a nice way to make my first post!
Sincerely,
Laurence Todd
